“NATURAL MYSTIC”

Youth Mural Project –
Summer 2006

Scarborough - Mural Routes is proud to announce the recent completion of the “NATURAL MYSTIC” mural at 3228 Eglinton Avenue East in the Scarborough Village Community.

The mural is one of three Mural Routes initiatives over the summer of 2006. The “Natural Mystic” project was funded by the City of Toronto Economic Development Mural Program, Graffiti Transformation, and the Ministry of Children and Youth Services Summer Jobs for Youth Program, through Tropicana Community Services. Partnered with Youthlink and Action for Neighbourhood Change, four youth artists Leo Lam, Faith Webster, Anthony Monohan and Juhyun Oh were engaged in applying their skills and building on their artistic talents over an 8 week period under the direction of artist mentor, Javid Alibhai.

The mural will be launched into the community on September 9th at 1:00 p.m. (at 3228 Eglinton Ave. E.). All are invited to attend the official launch and ceremony, officiated by Ward 36 Councillor, Brian Ashton. The youth artists will be on site, eager to share artistic elements behind the creative with the community.

Mural Routes is a not-for-profit charitable organization with a mandate to teach, learn and share initiatives in mural art. As the summer of 2006 draws to an end, the completion of the Kingston/Galloway “Hope for Harmony” youth mural project has recently been announced, and details regarding the CANSpace Malvern Mural Movement Festival, a one-day festival hosted by Mural Routes to be held on September 16, 2006 at the Malvern Public Library grounds, have recently been announced.

Close-up of the 20ft high detail:

This image represents about 1/7th of the total mural, however, it is the centerpiece – symmetrically and thematically – of the Natural Mystic.  The piece was heavily influenced by my recent experience of traveling through the Indian sub-continent, as well as by the war in Lebanon, which coupled with the degeneration of Baghdad, inspired me to create a fantasmic Arabian cityscape in the clouds.
