free as a bird

Aerosol on Wall. Ali Institute of Education Auditorium. Lahore, Pakistan. 2006

This mural was completed as part of a workshop series titled “Arts in Education” co-facilitated by Punjabi People’s Theatre, in Lahore, Pakistan.  My students (who were all adolescent females studying to be teachers) and I worked with aerosol and the stencil of a bird to create an Escher-like tellussion, bringing life and warmth to the Ali Institute’s Auditorium social hall.  This mural was a culmination of the exploration of notion that the bird, particularly in the context of women’s empowerment through education, symbolized a kind of freedom we can all cherish.

This mural was also part of the Beautiful Struggle Project.
