A Beautiful Struggle: the 1,000 Word Project

Those that have heard about BS1000 only need to know one thing: we have not given up on our mission. Much of the impetus for the project was based on the fact that there ARE already artists and arts organizations busy painting murals to celebrate and question the vitality of their respective communities. The purpose of BS1000 was to bring some of these wonderful projects under the same umbrella and promote their awesome work in a manner that will educate future activists, artists and students of community arts programs.

Mid-way through 2007 and this BS1000 update is long overdue. To-date, 5 murals have been completed since the project took off in January 2006. Until further notice, this page will be recognized as the home for BS1000, where we will showcase the progress to-date, as well as work and info from all the organizations and artists that took their valuable time and effort to contact us and share their experiences. We thank all of you again for your patience over the past year or so, but we would like to remind you that we are committed to our struggle regardless of how ugly it gets. In retrospect, with all the interesting work that has been completed and that will be completed, there is no doubt in our minds that it will be remembered as a beautiful struggle...

Project Overview

Goals:

•To produce murals in collaboration with int’l artists and arts orgs in the name of the MDGs
•To document these processes for presentation in a publication
•To create 1,000 word essay s to contextualize the issues represented in each mural painting
•To distribute the publication as an educational material worldwide

Methodology:

PHASE1:

Network with community centres and indigenous artists already running mural painting programs

PHASE2:

Create murals across the world and the research and writing of the thousand word essays on each mural.

PHASE3:

Organize art shows across the world beginning with a kick off event in Toronto, Canada. These art shows will feature prints of the different murals and serve as displays of the world’s talents.

PHASE4:

Put together a book showcasing all the murals from across the world. This book would also contain brief artist bios and their personal stories towards their interpretations of A Beautiful Struggle.  Accompanying each mural in the book will be individual thousand word pieces describing the plights facing young people in each locale that the murals were painted in.
