Rope of Imamat - Golden Jubilee 2008

Aerosol and Latex on Canvas . 6' x 3'. 2008

Coleurs D'Amour GJ exhibition

This painting celebrates the Golden Jubilee of Aga Khan IV by visualizing the Rope of Imamat from the first Imam to Our present living Imam. The first letter of each Imam's name has been painted in the Thuluth style of Arabic calligraphy. Each letter is color coded to match its number in the lineage of Imams (numbers are in Arabic).

For example, 'Ali, our first Imam, is spelled with the letter 'ain, written in gold, beside the number 1. The most common name in the lineage of Ismaili Imams is 'Ali, as the last 11 Imams (from the 39th to the 49th inclusively) all contain 'Ali - the numbers you can see rotating around the portrait of Aga Khan IV.
